Catholic Healthcare International (CHI) will host its 1st Annual Conference on Unsettled Issues in Bioethics on March 22, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan. This landmark event will bring together world-class medical and bioethics speakers to explore critical, unresolved issues in bioethics, with a special focus on brain death, end-of-life care, and the fate of frozen human embryos created via IVF. The conference is set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Terri Schiavo, whose case continues to be a touchstone in bioethical debates.
Conference Highlights:
- Keynote Address by Cardinal Raymond Burke – A leading voice in the Catholic Church on moral and bioethical issues, Cardinal Burke will address the intersection of faith, medicine, and the sanctity of life.
- Expert Panel Discussions – Renowned Catholic bioethicists, medical professionals, and legal scholars will engage in deep discussions on:
- Brain Death: Understanding the criteria and ethical dilemmas surrounding the determination of death.
- End-of-Life Decisions: Navigating the complex ethical questions surrounding life-sustaining treatment and current practices.
- Frozen Human Beings from IVF: The ethical considerations surrounding the preservation and fate of human beings created through in vitro fertilization.
“This conference is a chance for us to reflect on and engage with the unresolved questions in bioethics, many of which have deep personal and moral implications for individuals and families,” said Jere Palazzolo, Founder and President of CHI. “By honoring Terri Schiavo’s memory and delving into topics like brain death, end-of-life decisions, and the fate of the millions of human lives created from IVF, we aim to provide medical professionals and the public with the tools to navigate these challenging issues in a thoughtful, informed manner.”
Following the Bioethics Conference, Cardinal Burke will celebrate a Mass at the Cathedral in honor of Terri Schiavo, commemorating 20 years since her tragic passing. Also, join Bobby, Mary & Suzanne Schindler, and Kristina Fiore next door in the Diocesan Center for a special open house tribute exhibit: Remembering Terri, with mementoes and memories of Terri. A reception will follow.
